Shivapuri Hiking Detailed Itinerary

Morning: Drive to Budhanilkantha and Start the Hike

Your day begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Kathmandu. After a short drive of about 30 minutes, you will arrive at Budhanilkantha, the starting point of your hike. Budhanilkantha is famous for the ancient reclining statue of Lord Vishnu, also known as the Sleeping Vishnu. You can take a moment to visit this sacred site before beginning your hike.

From Budhanilkantha, the trail gradually ascends into the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. The hike starts with a gentle climb through dense forests, where you’ll be surrounded by the sounds of nature. As you ascend, the air becomes cooler and fresher, offering a welcome respite from the city’s hustle and bustle.

Mid-Morning: Visit Nagi Gompa Monastery

After about 1.5 to 2 hours of hiking, you’ll reach the Nagi Gompa, a Buddhist nunnery located on the slopes of Shivapuri Hill. The monastery is home to a community of nuns who dedicate their lives to meditation and prayer. The peaceful environment of the monastery provides an ideal place to rest and reflect. You can explore the monastery, interact with the nuns, and learn about their way of life.

From Nagi Gompa, the trail becomes steeper as you continue your ascent towards the top of Shivapuri Hill. The hike is moderately challenging but rewards you with stunning views of the surrounding landscapes.

Late Morning: Reach the Summit of Shivapuri Hill

After another hour or so of hiking, you will reach the summit of Shivapuri Hill. At 2,732 meters, the summit offers breathtaking views of the Langtang range, Ganesh Himal, and other Himalayan peaks. On a clear day, you can also see the distant peaks of Manaslu and the Annapurnas.

The summit is a great spot to take a break, enjoy your packed lunch, and soak in the panoramic views. Your guide will share stories about the significance of the area and point out the various peaks visible from the summit.

Afternoon: Descend Back to Budhanilkantha

After spending some time at the summit, you will begin your descent back to Budhanilkantha. The descent is easier and faster, taking about 1.5 to 2 hours. As you make your way down, you can continue to enjoy the natural beauty of the forest and perhaps spot some wildlife, such as monkeys, deer, or various bird species.

Once you reach Budhanilkantha, your vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Kathmandu. The drive back offers a final opportunity to take in the sights of the Kathmandu Valley.

Evening: Return to Hotel

You’ll arrive back at your hotel in Kathmandu by late afternoon or early evening, where you can relax and reflect on your day’s adventure. The hike concludes by early evening, leaving you with time to enjoy a leisurely dinner or explore more of Kathmandu on your own.
