Your journey begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Paro, offering stunning aerial views of the Himalayas, including Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Kanchenjunga. Upon arrival at Paro Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your Bhutanese guide. After completing immigration formalities, you will drive to Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan, located about 65 kilometers from Paro. The drive to Thimphu takes approximately 1.5 hours and offers beautiful views of the Paro River and surrounding mountains.
Upon reaching Thimphu, you will check into your hotel and enjoy a leisurely lunch. In the afternoon, take a stroll around Thimphu’s main streets, visiting the local market and the bustling Clock Tower Square. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Bhutanese dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight in Thimphu.
After breakfast, embark on a full day of sightseeing in Thimphu, starting with a visit to the Tashichho Dzong, the seat of Bhutan’s government and the office of the King. This impressive fortress-monastery is a prime example of Bhutanese architecture and serves as a symbol of the nation’s spiritual and temporal power.
Next, visit the Buddha Dordenma, a massive bronze statue of Buddha overlooking the Thimphu Valley. The statue, which stands at 51 meters, is one of the largest Buddha statues in the world and houses thousands of smaller Buddha statues inside. The site offers panoramic views of the valley and is a place of great spiritual significance.
Continue your tour with a visit to the National Memorial Chorten, built in memory of the third King of Bhutan. The chorten is a place of daily worship for many Bhutanese, and you can observe locals circumambulating the chorten and spinning prayer wheels.
After lunch, visit the Folk Heritage Museum, which provides insights into Bhutanese rural life and culture, and the National Textile Museum, showcasing Bhutan’s rich textile heritage. Conclude your day with a visit to the Handicrafts Emporium, where you can purchase traditional Bhutanese crafts. Enjoy dinner at your hotel. Overnight in Thimphu.
After an early breakfast, drive to Punakha, a town located about 72 kilometers from Thimphu. The drive takes approximately 2.5 hours and crosses the Dochula Pass (3,100 meters), where you can stop to enjoy panoramic views of the Himalayan range. The pass is adorned with 108 chortens, known as the Druk Wangyal Chortens, built in honor of Bhutanese soldiers.
Continue your journey to Punakha, descending into the lush Punakha Valley, which is known for its subtropical climate and fertile farmland. Upon arrival in Punakha, visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong, often considered the most beautiful dzong in Bhutan. The dzong is strategically located at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers and is known for its stunning architecture and historical significance. It served as the seat of government until the mid-1950s and continues to be the winter residence of the Je Khenpo (Chief Abbot) and the monastic community.
After visiting the dzong, take a short hike to the Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, a beautiful temple built to promote peace and harmony in the world. The hike takes about an hour and offers scenic views of the Punakha Valley and the surrounding rice terraces. The temple is perched on a hilltop and showcases fine Bhutanese craftsmanship, with intricate paintings and statues depicting Buddhist deities. After exploring the chorten, return to Punakha and enjoy a relaxing evening by the river. Dinner will be served at your hotel. Overnight in Punakha.
After breakfast, you will drive back to Paro, which is approximately 125 kilometers from Punakha. The drive takes around 4 hours, retracing your route through the Dochula Pass. Along the way, you can stop for tea and take in the views of the Himalayas once more.
Upon reaching Paro, check into your hotel and have lunch. In the afternoon, visit the National Museum of Bhutan, housed in the Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower. The museum exhibits a rich collection of Bhutanese art, artifacts, thangkas (traditional Buddhist paintings), and historical objects, providing a comprehensive overview of Bhutan’s cultural heritage.
Next, visit Rinpung Dzong, also known as Paro Dzong, which translates to “Fortress on a Heap of Jewels.” This impressive dzong was built in the 17th century and serves as the administrative and religious center of the Paro district. The dzong is a fine example of traditional Bhutanese architecture, with massive walls, ornate woodwork, and a picturesque location overlooking the Paro River.
After exploring the dzong, take a leisurely stroll across the wooden cantilever bridge (Nyamai Zam) below the dzong, offering a great view of the fortress and the river. Conclude your day with dinner at a local restaurant or your hotel. Overnight in Paro.
Today is dedicated to exploring the highlights of Paro Valley. After an early breakfast, embark on a hike to the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang Monastery), one of the most revered and iconic sites in Bhutan. The monastery is perched on a cliffside, about 900 meters above the Paro Valley floor, and the hike to reach it takes about 4-5 hours round trip, depending on your pace.
The trail begins with a gradual ascent through pine forests, with prayer flags fluttering in the breeze. Along the way, you’ll come across a small teahouse where you can rest and enjoy panoramic views of the monastery. As you continue your hike, the trail becomes steeper, eventually leading to the final staircase that takes you to the entrance of the monastery.
Legend has it that Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) flew to this site on the back of a tigress in the 8th century, and he meditated here for three months, subduing evil spirits and spreading Buddhism. The monastery complex consists of several temples and meditation caves, each with its own significance. The interior of the monastery is adorned with beautiful murals and statues, and the spiritual atmosphere is palpable.
After visiting Tiger’s Nest, descend back to the valley and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, visit the Drukgyel Dzong, a ruined fortress that once defended Bhutan against Tibetan invasions. Although the dzong was largely destroyed by fire in the 1950s, its ruins still stand as a testament to Bhutan’s resilience and strategic prowess.
Next, visit the Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most sacred temples. It is believed to have been built in the 7th century by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo to pin down the left foot of a giant demoness who was preventing the spread of Buddhism. The temple is a serene and spiritual place, with ancient murals and statues that reflect Bhutan’s deep-rooted Buddhist traditions.
Conclude your day with a visit to a local farmhouse, where you can experience Bhutanese hospitality and learn about traditional farming practices. Enjoy a home-cooked dinner with a local family, sampling Bhutanese delicacies such as ema datshi (chili and cheese) and butter tea. Overnight in Paro.
